SUMMARY:Metabolism out of balance: Between research and social relevance
DESCRIPTION:Changing lifestyles and conditions significantly promote the de
velopment of different kinds of non-infectious diseases like type II diabet
es, dementia or cardiovascular disorders. They all have in common metabolic
dysregulation and imbalanced energy conversion. However, in the last decad
es research in life sciences and medicine delivered many new tools to eluci
date biochemical basics and clinical manifestations of metabolic disorders.
For social aspects, it must be evaluated how far these new technologies ca
n be applied for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes besides conservative t
reatment like gastric surgery in case of adipositas for instance.\n\nThe sy
mposium focuses on research into the causes and treatment strategies of met
abolic diseases and their outstanding social relevance. Due to its high imp
act on public health, experts from different fields will present recent dat
a and developments regarding dysregulated metabolism and will discuss toget
her the influence of lifestyle-related diseases on society. The symposium
is organized by Prof. Dr. Hannelore Daniel, Prof. Dr. Christian Wolfrum und
Prof. Dr. Alexander Pfeifer, who contribute to the program as well.\n\nFur
