SUMMARY:Quantum Science and Technologies
DESCRIPTION:What are quanta and what are quantum technologies? How can ther
 e be advantages over using classical systems? Quantum physics seems abstrac
 t and difficult to grasp.\n\nThe lecture attempts making the topic more acc
 essible. For this purpose, the very foundations of quantum physics are revi
 ewed for a general audience with special emphasis on visualizing essential 
 ingredients such as the quantum measurement process and the relevance of no
 n-commuting operations.\n\nEveryday phenomena are used to ease the understa
 nding. On-stage demonstrations will be used whenever appropriate. So prepar
 ed, the concept of a quantum computer will be discussed, as well as the con
 dition under which it can bring a computational advantage. Other applicatio
 ns of quantum physics will also be mentioned.\n\nBefore the Leopoldina Lect
 ure by Professor Dr Gerd Leuchs ML at 18:30, the certificates will be prese
 nted to the new members of Class I Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Engine
