SUMMARY:Rethinking the History of Mathematical Symbolism
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of the 19th century, the history of mathema
tical symbolism has been one of the central themes in some historiographies
, emphasising the uniqueness of Europe and distinguishing it from the rest
of the world (or certain parts of Europe from others).\n\nIn her lecture, K
arine Chemla ML will shed light on how this history has been approached, hi
ghlighting  some tacit assumptions that have biased these historiographies.
She will  argue for a rethinking of respective  aspects of the history of
mathematical practice.\n\nKarine ChemlaKarine Chemla is a sinologist and hi
storian of mathematics. Her research focuses on the historiography and hist
ory of mathematical symbolism. She is currently conducting research on this
topic at the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh.\n\nYou
are cordially invited by: Christina Brandt ML, Dieter Hoffmann ML und Ronja
Steffensky\n\nML = Member of the Leopoldina
