SUMMARY:Science-Policy Initiative on Air Pollution and Health
DESCRIPTION:Air pollution is a major, preventable and manageable threat to 
 people’s health, well-being and the fulfilment of sustainable development. 
 Air pollution is estimated to contribute to at least 5 million premature de
 aths each year across the world. No one remains unaffected by dirty air, bu
 t the adverse impacts of air pollution fall most heavily upon vulnerable po
 pulations, such as children, women, and people living in poverty. Clean air
  is as vital to life on earth as clean water.\n\nThe Academy of Science of 
 South Africa, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the German National Academ
 y of Sciences Leopoldina, the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, and the U.
 S. National Academy of Sciences have started an initiative on “Air Pollutio
 n and Health” relating to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The five ac
 ademies brought together leading scientists from South Africa, Brazil, Germ
 any, and the United States as well as representatives of the UN and civil s
 ociety.\n\nThe outcome of this initiative is a compact science-policy state
 ment, which addresses global options and measures to reduce air pollution-a
 ssociated risks to health. In this event, the statement will be launched an
 d handed over in a ceremony to the South African, Brazilian, German, and U.
 S. Permanent Representatives to the UN and senior UN representatives.\n\nWe
