SUMMARY:Towards Health: Equality, Responsibility and Research
DESCRIPTION:“Towards Health: Equality, Responsibility and Research“ is the
title of the first Nobel Prize Dialogue to be held in Germany. Five Nobel L
aureates and further experts discuss the future of health, healthcare and r
esearch. \n\nHow many healthy years do we have over the life course? What d
o innovations contribute to quality of life? This is not only a medical que
stion or a matter of the healthcare system. Experts will discuss how educat
ion, work, environment and inequality relate to health.\n\nThe speakers at
the event will include Leopoldina member Edvard Moser (Nobel Laureate in Ph
ysiology or Medicine 2014). Alvin Roth (Laureate in Economic Sciences 2012)
, Tomas Lindahl (Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2015), Peter Agre (Nobel Laure
ate in Chemistry 2003) and Kristie Ebi from the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change (IPCC). The IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 w
ill also speak at the dialogue.\n\nEdvard Moser is a neuroscientist. He bec
ame known for his work on spatial orientation and spatial memory in mammals
. The Stanford economist Alvin Roth will discuss the exchange model which h
e developed for living-donor kidney transplantation. This model aims to hel
p alleviate the shortage of donor organs. Tomas Lindahl is a biochemist. Hi
s discovery that repair mechanisms of the DNA carrier exist has contributed
to the development of anti-cancer drugs. The molecular biologist Peter Agr
e has focused his research on the fight against malaria. This deadly infect
ious disease is a major problem in Africa and could once again spread furth
er northward as a result of climate change. Kristie Ebi will also be discus
sing climate change, specifically its harmful effects on human health.\n\nS
imultaneous translation into German will be provided.\n\nPhoto: Peter Agre
