SUMMARY:Vision and Certainty at the Academia Naturæ Curiosorum
DESCRIPTION:Vision was an important area of investigation at the Academia N
 aturæ Curiosorum, the later Leopoldina, throughout the second half of the s
 eventeenth century since its foundation. This talk seeks to explore the ran
 ge of activities that the members of the Academy carried out in studying th
 e mechanism of vision, and ask: Why did vision fascinate the Academia Natur
 æ Curiosorum? As a learned society whose members were mostly medical practi
 tioners, how did its subjects and methods of study differ from those of oth
 er academic societies at that time? Moreover, the dysfunction of the eye re
 ceived particular examinations from the Academy, which called into question
  the reliability and trustworthy of the sense sight. The tension between vi
 sion and certainty not only concerned medicine as a discipline, but also th
 e very foundation of knowledge.\n\nProf. Dr. Rainer Godel and Leopoldina me
