Today’s science system is characterized by increased competition to optimize the measurable aspects of research. Quantification and the use of indicators and metrics in the assessment of research performance determine the everyday life of a researcher. The resulting pressure to conform and to publish is detrimental to the quality of research and to the willingness to take risks, especially for early career researchers. The following ten principles are a suggestion to improve the quality of personnel selection procedures in academia.
