SUMMARY:Assessing the Security Implications of Genome Editing Technology
DESCRIPTION:The academies of science, including the InterAcademy Partnershi
p (IAP), the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC), the US Na
tional Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), and the Ge
rman National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, are convening an internationa
l workshop of experts in genetic engineering, security studies and public p
olicy.\n\nThis workshop is kindly supported and hosted by the Volkswagen Fo
undation and aims to examine the latest advances in genome editing and anal
yse current and potential applications in a wide range of organisms such as
microbes, plants, animals and humans. Participants will also address the d
ebates about their potential risks and misuse. The need for international d
ialogue is particularly important because of the rapid development and wide
-spread use of genome editing tools, such as the CRISPR-Cas9 system, in cou
ntries with various, sometimes divergent, regulations and governance of res
earch.\n\nThe project will explore near- middle- and long-term security con
cerns - relating to intentional misuse - that may arise from these applicat
ions and discuss technical, operational, regulatory and governance strategi
es that may aid the scientific and security communities in preventing or mi
tigating those security concerns. A report summarising the workshop discuss
ions will be published jointly by the academies.\n\nWeitere Informationen u
nd Anmeldung\n\nDie Veranstaltung richtet sich an alle Interessierten. Der
Eintritt ist frei. Um eine Anmeldung wird gebeten. Anmeldung
