SUMMARY:Experiencing Nature through Old and New Epistemes Around the Globe
DESCRIPTION: The colonial encounter holds a central place in the global his
 tory of early modern science. Missionary explorations and military voyages 
 sponsored by the Spanish and Portuguese empires, for instance, provided opp
 ortunities for personal contact with different cultures, climates, and Indi
 genous epistemes. Scientists and physicians alike were confronted with phil
 osophical, medical, and religious dilemmas regarding how to build these new
  facts into the epistemic fabric of their existing sciences, and, in turn, 
 how to amend their sciences in light of the new facts.\n\nBut what is the s
 tatus of projects by members of institutions that seemingly fall outside th
 e framework of colonial and epistemic translation, such as the Academia Nat
 urae Curiosorum, today known as the Leopoldina? The scientists of the Leopo
 ldina seem to share characteristics with projects of colonialism, such as a
 ppropriation of new knowledge, collections of natural objects in their Wund
 erkammern, and reliance upon Indigenous translations. This workshop looks a
 t how the Leopoldina is situated within global exchanges of knowledge and i
 nquires into the ways in which such knowledge affected scientific practices
  and theories among the Leopoldina members, and into its repercussions on t
 raditional scientific and medical theory and practice.\n\nThe workshop is o
 rganised in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for the History of Sc
