SUMMARY:Genome Editing in Germany and Korea
DESCRIPTION:Modern molecular techniques, often referred to as “genome editi
ng”, are currently revolutionizing molecular biology research. Technologies
such as CRISPR-Cas9 allow for surprisingly simple, controlled gene modific
ations that are more efficient than the previously available methods. This
opens up a new scope for molecular biological basic research, particularly
into organisms that were not previously accessible for molecular genetic pu
rposes, and for elucidating poorly understood gene functions.  It also allo
ws for far-reaching applications, from new options for plant breeding and b
iotechnology to somatic gene therapy for human genetic diseases. Focused ba
sic research is still necessary. At the same time, a safe and responsible a
pplication of genome editing should be ensured respecting the needs of huma
nity and the environment. Renowned scientists from Germany and South Korea
will address current trends in these fields of research and discuss possibl
e options for future scientific cooperation. Keynotes will be delivered by
Prof. Dr. Jin-Soo Kim, Seoul, and Prof. Dr. Emmanuelle Charpentier, Berlin.
Dr. Kim will give the morning keynote on Monday, 19 September on “CRISPR R
NA-guided genome editing in human stem cells, animals, and plants”. Leopold
ina member Dr. Charpentier will give the evening keynote on Monday, 19 Sept
ember on “CRISPR-CAS9: a game changer in genome engineering: origins and ov
erview”.\n\nKAST and Leopoldina\n\nIn May 2012, the German National Academy
of Sciences Leopoldina and the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (K
AST) signed a Memorandum of Understanding, thus highlighting their strategi
c partnership. Within the framework of this cooperation agreement, high-pro
file joint symposia on topics of global relevance are organized on a regula
r basis.\n\nImage: Sisters of Design – Anja Krämer & Claudia Dölling GbR \n
