SUMMARY:Leopoldina-Symposium "Genomics of speciation, species differences a
 nd adaptations"
DESCRIPTION:Wissenschaftliche Vorbereitung: Axel Meyer ML (Konstanz) In thi
s symposium we are bringing together a number of researchers from abroad an
d from Germany who have conducted ecological and evolutionary research on s
pecies differences or who have worked on the genomics of speciation and eco
logical adaptation. The methodological toolbox to scan whole genomes of spec
ies to identify genetic loci and mutations in genes that confer differences
between species and/or that may bring about speciation through the evoluti
on of reproductive barriers has expanded drastically in the last few years.
Through several novel genomic approaches such as next generation high-thro
ughput sequencing, QTL analyses and association studies it has recently bec
ome possible to inspect entire genomes of individuals or even populations f
or genetic differences that might be of relevance for ecology and evolution
. Because of these new methods and the resulting huge genomic data sets it
has now become possible to scan entire genomes of species for tell-tale gen
etic differences that might be associated with phenotypic traits that cause
ecologically and evolutionary relevant differences. In this workshop we are
hoping to initiate a transfer of knowledge between researchers at the fore
front of these new technical and conceptual developments in the genomics of
species differences, speciation and adaptation to changing environments, w
ith young researchers in evolutionary biology.
