SUMMARY:Leopoldina-Symposium „The circadian system: From chronobiology to c
 hronomedicine”
DESCRIPTION:During the last two decades, molecular, cell biological, and ne
urobiological investigations have revolutionized our understanding of the c
ircadian system and underpinned its overall relevance for the control of bo
dy functions. The circadian system is involved in the control of many physi
ological processes including the sleep-wake cycle, blood pressure, body tem
perature, metabolism and cell cycle. These discoveries have established chr
onobiology as a cutting-edge scientific discipline that provides us with an
excellent basis to develop and establish a rational and systematic chronom
edicine involving a broad range of clinical disciplines from psychiatry to
oncology and social medicine. The symposium will bring together internation
ally renowned pioneers in basic circadian research and clinical experts in
chronomedicine to discuss the state of the art and to develop novel strateg
 ies in chronomedicine.
