SUMMARY:Vortrag: Characterization of regulatory small RNAs and RNA-binding
 proteins
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Tuschl studies how RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) and small-
RNA-containing ribonucleoprotein complexes (RNPs) regulate messenger RNAs (
mRNAs) in human cells. The lab develops experimental approaches to precisel
y define the RNA recognition elements (RREs) bound by RBPs and RNPs and exa
mine their regulatory function at a transcriptome level. Current studies fo
cus on characterizing RBPs that control mRNA stability or where mutations c
ause genetic diseases, such as fragile X syndrome and amyotrophic lateral s
clerosis. The identification of posttranscriptional regulatory networks wil
l increase our understanding of the molecular causes of disease and may lea
d to the rational design of new therapeutic agents. Finally, we are establi
shing a platform for discovery and use of RNA as a biomarker by recording a
nd quantifying alteration in transcript isoforms and their abundance in nor
mal and disease conditions using deep sequencing followed by RNA fluorescen
ce in situ hybridization in large pathological tissue collections. Eine Anm
