Michael Sela, a member of the Weizmann Institute of Science since 1950, served as its President from 1975 to 1985, and in a host of key positions before and since.  He continues in active research in the department of Immunology, which he founded.  His primary research interests are the structure, function and mechanism of action of proteins, the molecular basis of immunological phenomena, and the genetic control of immune response  His investigations have led o a drug for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (Copaxone) and the use of combinations of antibodies and drugs in cancer immunotherapy. Prof. Sela has held numerous overseas appointments. His achievements have been recognized by membership in numerous national academies and many prizes and honors.
