The Art of Building Small
Prof. Dr. Ben L. Feringa
Stratingh Institute for Chemistry, University of Groningen (Netherlands)

Exploring across the current frontiers of chemical sciences, there is vast uncharted territory to experience the joy of discovery. Far beyond Nature’s design, the creative power of synthetic chemistry provides unlimited opportunities to realise our own molecular world as we experience every day with products ranging from drugs to displays. In the art of building small we explore the fascinating field of molecular nanoscience. Among the major challenges ahead in the design of complex artificial molecular systems is the control over dynamic functions and responsive far-from-equilibrium behaviour. A major goal is to gain control over translational and rotary motion. The focus is on Feringa’s journey in the world of molecular switches and motors.

Ben L. Feringa ML
Ben L. Feringa has performed groundbreaking research in synthetic and physical organic chemistry ranging from asymmetric catalysis to molecular nanotechnology and dynamic molecular systems. His work has gained widespread recognition beyond the field of chemistry for his pioneering research on molecular machines including the discovery of the first light-driven rotary molecular motor. Ben Feringa is full professor at the University of Groningen. He received the Nobel prize in Chemistry 2016 “for the design and synthesis of molecular machines“.
