Detlef Günther is distinguished for many important contributions to analytical chemistry, which were carried out at ETH and which received international recognition. He made most significant contributions in the field of laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, which developed to one of the most important techniques for trace element analysis and isotope ratio determinations.
With his fundamental research, development of instrumentation and methods and applications he provided the ground for many new insights into processes in geology, biology, chemistry, archeology, medicine and material sciences.
