Andreas Meyer-Lindenberg is director of Germany's Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Chairman of its department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy and Chair at the University of Heidelberg, positions he has held since 2007.
Prior to his work at the Central Institute of Mental Health, Professor Meyer-Lindenberg spent 10 years at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, MD., first as a visiting associate, then staff clinician, and finally investigator. His career has combined studies of genetic indicators of mental illness with neuroimaging to help uncover the biological mechanisms of mental disorders, especially schizophrenia and affective disorders, and neural mechanisms of complex social behavior. His long-term goal is to move these mechanistic insights into novel treatments.
Professor Meyer-Lindenberg received his MD from the University of Bonn, a PhD (Habilitation) from the University of Giessen, and a MSc in Mathematics from the University of Hagen, all Germany. Among others, he has been awarded the ACNP Elkes Award, the Bennett Award of the Society for Biological Psychiatry, and the Nature Medicine Prize for Translational Neuroscience. He is a 2009 National Alliance of Research in Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) Distinguished Investigator and has authored more than 120 articles for journals such as Science, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Medicine, and PNAS.
