As an independent voice of science, the Leopoldina contributes to well-founded, responsible, and future-oriented decisions in politics and society. It is convinced that science provides important impetus for the well-being of all, for a democratic society, and for an environment worth living in. The Leopoldina brings this knowledge together and presents it in a way that is understandable and tailored to its audience. For state politics, federal politics, the heads of state and government of the G7, and all interested parties.

We want to communicate science in an understandable way and get people talking about it. In events, projects and formats for all age groups, the Leopoldina shares current knowledge, invites people to join in and creates spaces for discussion and encounters.

As a national academy of sciences, the Leopoldina is part of numerous national and international academy networks. In these partnerships, it works with science academies worldwide to share knowledge, develop joint statements and address global challenges.

The Centre for Science Studies of the Leopoldina initiates and organises independent research projects at the Leopoldina and provides the necessary infrastructure. It supports the Academy as a research centre with regard to its current tasks and in the unbiased and critical examination of its history. It is the point of contact for fundamental communication processes and reflective approaches within the sciences and humanities and thus anchors scientific research institutionally at the Academy.

“Tradition is preserved progress, progress is continued tradition.” Carl Friedrich Freiherr von Weizsäcker (1912-2007, ML 1959). In keeping with this quote, the archive and library are the guardians of the rich cultural heritage of the world's oldest academy of sciences and modern information service providers for members, researchers, and the public.

The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina recognises outstanding scientific achievements and special commitment with a wide range of awards - including medals, prizes and honorary and supporting memberships.
