France
In France, the Leopoldina works primarily with the Académie des sciences. The two academies promote scientific exchange, for example through jointly organised high-level scientific symposia. They are also actively engaged in international policy advice.

Académie des sciences as a Key Partner
The Leopoldina and the Académie des sciences strengthen exchange between the scientific communities in Germany and France. The partnership was formalised in 2013, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty, through a Memorandum of Understanding and has since been continuously expanded. The Leopoldina’s ties with France, however, go back much further: as early as 1679, the French physician Charles Patin was elected to the Leopoldina as its first member from abroad. Today, too, around 30 distinguished French researchers are members of the Leopoldina.
Key Areas of Bilateral Cooperation
The Leopoldina and the Académie des sciences regularly organise high-level symposia and workshops covering the full spectrum of scientific disciplines. These formats serve not only to foster scientific exchange, but in some cases also lead to joint activities in science-based policy advice, such as the recommendations for a “Joint German-French Robotics and AI Strategy” published in 2018. In recent years, exchange on the subject of academic freedom has also been intensified.
Multilateral Cooperation Formats
Beyond this, the two academies work together in international policy advice, in particular in advising the G7 and G20 summits of heads of state and government. The Leopoldina and the Académie des sciences are also jointly involved in European and international networks such as EASAC, IAP and ISC. Through these networks, they contribute together to global science policy discourse and advocate the strengthening of science-based policy and societal advice.
