The Leopoldina and the Académie des sciences strengthen the exchange between the scientific communities of both countries. They regularly organise high-level symposia and workshops covering topics ranging from the humanities and social sciences to medicine and the natural and technical sciences.
The two academies also work closely together on international policy advice, for example in the preparation of statements for G7 and G20 summits. This cooperation is based on a partnership agreement from 2012.
The connection to France goes back a long way: the physician Charles Patin was elected as the first French member back in 1679. Renowned French researchers are still members of the Leopoldina today.
The collaboration also provides bilateral impetus, for example with the "Joint Franco-German Robotics AI Strategy" published in 2018. The two academies continuously combine scientific expertise with internationally relevant political issues.
