Election of new Leopoldina members
Membership of the Leopoldina is considered one of the highest scientific honours. New members are admitted exclusively on the recommendation of existing members. Selection takes place in a careful, multi-stage process that lasts around a year and comprehensively assesses the scientific excellence of the nominees.

The election procedure is confidential and begins with a nomination by at least three Leopoldina members, two of whom must belong to the relevant Section. The documents to be submitted include the nomination form available from the Academy’s Elections Office, a short curriculum vitae and a complete list of the candidate's publications.
Each nomination then undergoes three readings: Firstly, the members of the relevant section evaluate the proposals in writing. In the second reading, the class discusses the nominations submitted and ranks them. Finally, in the third reading, the extended Presidium decides on admission. The candidates are not informed during the entire process; membership only becomes effective once the election has been accepted.
