National Academy of Sciences (NAS) as the Principal Partner
The United States has one of the most innovation-driven research systems in the world. The Leopoldina has worked closely for many years with the NAS, one of the world’s leading science academies and part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM).
The transatlantic connection is also reflected in the Leopoldina’s membership: more than 100 members of the Academy come from the United States.
Scientific Cooperation and Policy Advice
One focus of the cooperation lies in G7 and G20 policy advice. In 2026, the NAS is coordinating the Science20 process, and in 2027 it will take the lead in providing scientific advice for the G7 summit in the United States.
Joint initiatives undertaken by the Leopoldina and the NAS include workshops and symposia, in some cases also involving third partners, as in the German-Israeli-American conferences Digitization and Democracy (2021) and Energy Solutions (2023). Together with other partners, the NAS and the Leopoldina also support the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and Ukrainian researchers.
Regular Coordination on International Networks
Like the Leopoldina, the US academies are also active in global academy networks. The Leopoldina regularly coordinates with its partners on engagement in international networks, including IAP and ISC. This occasionally gives rise to specific initiatives, most recently a statement on climate-resilient health initiated by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in connection with COP30 in Brazil.
A further link is their shared commitment to academic freedom and human rights. The Leopoldina’s Human Rights Committee is a member of the International Human Rights Network (IHRN), whose secretariat is based at the NAS in Washington, D.C.
