Germany and South Korea are linked by lively scientific cooperation - from basic research to technology development. The Leopoldina and KAST have been working together for many years to strengthen the exchange between the scientific communities of both countries. They are also jointly involved in international policy advice, for example in statements for the G20 summits.
The partnership is based on a cooperation agreement concluded in 2012. KAST is also the link to the Asian region, where the secretariat of the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA) is based.
A central element of the co-operation are joint symposia, which take place alternately in Germany and Korea. They deal with current scientific and social topics, from stem cell research, assistance robotics and artificial intelligence to the energy transition.
In 2025, Leopoldina and KAST published a joint science-for-policy paper for the first time with proposals for stronger bilateral cooperation on energy issues. In further Leopoldina-KAST Lectures, outstanding researchers present their work to a wider audience.
