The Brazilian Academy of Sciences (Academia Brasileira de Ciências, ABC) is the Leopoldina's central partner in Latin America. Both academies work together in bilateral and multilateral projects and coordinate their activities in international networks.
One focus of the cooperation is the series of science-for-policy workshops on "Water and Regional Development", launched as part of the "Germany + Brazil 2012/2013" year and continued ever since.
The workshops take place in the lecture theatre, in the laboratory and in the field and offer a platform for scientific exchange between established and young researchers in the field of natural resources, in particular water, mining and regional development. Research trends and socio-political interactions are discussed.
The results of the workshops are summarised in science-for-policy reports and virtual panels in order to achieve a transnational reach. Selected results were presented at the United Nations in New York.
