Renowned Japanese Scientists as Members of the Leopoldina
Strong scientific relations between the Leopoldina and its Japanese partners have existed for many years and are characterised by continuous exchange, which is also reflected in the Leopoldina’s membership. Its members include, among others, the Japanese Nobel laureates Tasuku Honjo and Satoshi Ōmura.
The Science Council of Japan as the Principal Partner
The Science Council of Japan (SCJ) fulfils the role of a national academy in Japan. Cooperation between the Leopoldina and the SCJ aims to make scientific perspectives from Germany and Japan more visible in international contexts and to strengthen dialogue between the research communities of both countries. Both academies regularly contribute to international policy advice, particularly through input into G7 and G20 processes.
Cooperation with the Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS forum)
Another central point of reference in the cooperation with Japan is the STS forum in Kyoto. At this annual conference, held since 2004, decision-makers from politics, business and academia discuss current developments in science and technology and their societal implications.
The President of the Leopoldina is a member of the Council of the STS forum and plays an active role in shaping its strategic direction. Through the conference panels and the Academy Presidents’ Meeting, the President and other representatives of the Leopoldina contribute, in particular, perspectives on the role of basic research and the promotion of interdisciplinary cooperation to the international exchange, while also maintaining direct dialogue with leading representatives of international science academies.
