The Leopoldina and the PAN have a long-standing relationship. In addition to its role as a learned society, the PAN unites research institutes and infrastructures under its umbrella brand, making it the most important research organisation in Poland. The two national academies network German and Polish researchers in thematic symposia.
They also regularly exchange views on strategic issues relating to European science policy. The aim is to strengthen the global competitiveness of EU research and innovation and to support a more cohesive research landscape across Europe.
The two national academies work together on European policy advice, for example on the consequences of climate change in Europe and Eurasia at national and regional level. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they established a close exchange of experience on science-based crisis response.
The PAN and the Leopoldina provided scientific diplomatic impetus in the alliance to support the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine after the start of the Russian war of aggression - together with the national academies from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Sweden and the Czech Republic.
