The Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) as the Principal Partner

The Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) holds a special position within Poland’s science system: it is not only a learned society, but also brings together research institutes and infrastructures under one roof, making it the country’s leading research institution. Through joint symposia, the two academies connect German and Polish researchers and promote exchange on current scientific issues.

A Shared European Focus

Dialogue on questions of European science policy also forms part of the cooperation with PAN. The aim is to support a more cohesive, excellence-based research landscape across Europe and thereby strengthen the global competitiveness of EU research and innovation.

The two academies also work together in European policy advice, for example through the organisation of the European Climate Conference in Warsaw in 2023, at which experts from 45 countries analysed the effects of climate change in Europe and Eurasia at national and regional level. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Leopoldina and PAN also maintained a regular exchange on science-based crisis response.

Commitment to Ukraine

In the field of science diplomacy, PAN and the Leopoldina provided important impetus following the outbreak of Russia’s war of aggression: together with the national academies of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Sweden and the Czech Republic, they formed an alliance to support the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
