Axel Haverich is distinguished for many important contributions to cardiothoracic, transplantation and vascular surgery as well as research in tissue engineering. The majority of these were made at the Leibniz Research Laboratories for Biotechnology and Artificial Organs at Hannover Medical School, which he has led for more than 12 years and developed into a world renowned institution. He made major contributions in the field of transplantation medicine and research in tissue engineering. Because of his engagement in research of tissue engineered heart valves he is well-known worldwide.
