Dr. Charles Yanofsky is Professor, emeritus, in the Biological Sciences Department, at Stanford University, Stanford California, USA. He has made many scientific contributions during his 50 years at this institution. These include providing our initial understanding of the enzymatic reactions and intermediates involved in tryptophan synthesis, establishing gene-protein colinearity, using the trpA gene and TrpA protein of E. coli; establishing the features of RNA-based regulation by transcription attenuation, and revealing the variety of regulatory mechanisms microorganisms use in controlling the rate of tryptophan biosynthesis. He has been at Stanford University since 1958.
