Prof. Dr. Eberhard Hofmann

Eberhard Hofmann bearbeitete den oxidativen Stoffwechsel von Retikulozyten und seine Veränderungen bei deren Reifung zu Erythrozyten. Danach wandte er sich dem Warburg- und Pasteur-Effekt in Aszites-Tumorzellen zu und untersuchte ihre Kontrollenzyme Phosphofruktokinase und Pyruvatkinase. Es folgten Arbeiten über die molekulare Basis der Induktion von Enzymen in der fetalen und neonatalen Rattenleber sowie (seit etwa 1980) die mathematische Modellierung und experimentelle Erforschung der dynamischen Eigenschaften minimaler nichtlinearer Enzymsysteme, die vorausberechenbar Hysterese, ungedämpfte Oszillationen und Multistabiltät aufweisen. Seit 1954 hat er etwa 250 wissenschaftliche Originalarbeiten veröffentlicht. Er ist Autor eines Lehrbuches für „Medizinische Biochemie“, das bisher in zehn Auflagen erschienen ist.

Eberhard Hofmann investigated the oxidative metabolism of reticulocytes und its changes during maturation of these cells to erythrocytes. Then he turned to research into the Warburg- und Pasteur-effects in ascites tumour-cells, in particular into the role of their control enzymes phosphofructokinase and pyruvate kinase, followed by the investigation of the molecular basis of the induction of enzymes in the fetal and neonatal rat liver. In the nineteen-eighties he started work on the mathematical modelling and experimental investigation of the dynamic properties of minimal nonlinear enzyme systems exhibiting predictable hysteresis, sustained oscillations, and multistability. Since 1954 he has published approximately 250 research papers. He is author of a textbook on “Medical biochemistry” with hitherto ten editions.
