Nach mehr als 50-jähriger Forschungstätigkeit ist Emanuel Vogels Name mit den vier folgenden, in der organisch-chemischen Grundlagenforschung angesiedelten Arbeitsgebieten eng verbunden: 1) Chemie Kleiner Kohlenstoffringe; 2) Konzeption der überbrückten Annulene mit Naphthalin- bzw. Acenperimeter (fanden Eingang in Lehrbücher der organischen Chemie); 3) Entdeckung des biologisch relevanten Benzoloxids (mit H. Günther); 4) Interpretation der Porphyrine als überbrückte Annulene der Natur; Design und Synthese von Porphycen, des ersten Konstitutionsisomers des Porphyrins. Obwohl erstes und letztes der vier Hauptarbeitsgebiete weit voneinander entfernt sind, liegt ein Opus von seltener Geschlossenheit vor, das sich evolutionär aus der Chemie der Kleinen Kohlenstoffringe entwickelt hat.
Emanuel Vogel opened new avenues of research in various areas of organic chemistry. Today, more than fifty years after his first publication, Vogel’s name is associated with the design and synthesis of a host of novel organic molecules of general chemical interest. It was mainly in the following four areas that he has made seminal contributions: 1) Development of the synthetic potential of small carbon rings, molecules that were considered as chemical exotics at the time; 2) Discovery of bridged annulenes with a naphthalene or acene perimeter (main work that found entry into text books of organic chemistry); 3) Synthesis of the elusive biologically relevant benzene oxide (with H. Günther); 4) Breakthrough in porphyrin chemistry by bringing to light porphycene, the first constitutional isomer of porphyrin. Despite its diversity, Vogel’s work represents a unified whole in that it developed in an evolutionary way out of his early studies on small carbon rings.
