Prof. Dr. Gottfried Benad (✝︎)

Gottfried Benad gehört zu den Pionieren der deutschen Anästhesiologie und Intensivtherapie. Er hat wesentlichen Anteil an der in Ostdeutschland schon 1969 erreichten Verselbständigung der Anästhesiologie und ihrer akademischen Anerkennung als Ausbildungs- und Prüfungsfach von Medizin- und Zahnmedizinstudenten. Seine umfassenden wissenschaftlichen Aktivitäten lagen vor allem auf dem Gebiet der Muskelrelaxation und ihrer elektromyographischen Kontrolle, der Auswirkungen verschiedener Formen der Allgemeinanästhesie auf die Hämodynamik und der speziellen Probleme der Kardioanaesthesie. Zuletzt widmete er sich der Geschichte der Anästhesiologie. 

Gottfried Benad is one of the German pioneers of anaesthesiology and intensive care. He contributed intensively to the developing process of anaesthesiology as an independent medical specialty in the GDR, which led in 1969 to full academic recognition of anaesthesiology through its inclusion in the training programmes of both medical and dental students and their state exams in East Germany. His scientific activities included mainly muscle relaxants and their electromyographic control, effects of various kinds of general anaesthesia on the haemodynamic system and the special problems of cardiac anaesthesia. Most recently, he devoted himself to the history of anaesthesiology.
