Research
Hans-Joachim Gehrke has been President of the German Archaeological Institute Berlin until 2011. For many years before he had been Professor of Ancient History at Universities of Würzburg, Berlin (FU) and Freiburg (1982-2008). His research activities and publications range widely, from Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic Greece to the Roman Republic and Empire, from social and political history to the history of political concepts and theories, including the role of history in shaping collective identities.
He is particularly interested in the transdisciplinary collaboration between history, archaeology and the life and earth sciences. In all these fields he made major contributions, particularly in analyzing ancient civil wars and methods of socio-political reconciliation and in creating the concept of intentional history.
