Prof. Dr. István Klinghammer

István Klinghammer is a Hungarian cartographer. He focuses on the development of computer cartography applications and conducts research into the history of cartography. His work in the field of cartography began with the analysis of methodological questions relating to cartographic representation, which he pursued right up to automated cartography, thus linking traditional cartography to the novel possibilities presented by applied computer science.
In addition to these computer cartography applications, he has also conducted research into the history of cartography. For more than 18 years he was head of the Institute for Cartography and Geoinformatics at the Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest, a period in which it gained increasing international recognition. He played an important role in shaping training for cartography and geoinformatics students and greatly helped to popularise cartography. He is the author and co-author of 14 books and has published more than 100 scientific studies in academic journals and edited volumes.
