Research
Orlando Guntinas-Lichius is engaged since more than 20 years in the improvement of peripheral nerve regeneration, especially after lesion and defective healing of the facial nerve. His scientific work has started in an interdisciplinary working group consisting of Institute of Anatomy and ENT department at the University of Cologne. He has continued these studies since 2 years at the University in Jena, where he is professor and chairman of the ENT clinic.
The study group has established a animal model that allows the parallel examination of histomorphologic, molecular biologic and functional image analysis of changes due to nerve regeneration and its therapeutic manipulation for the whole pathway beginning in the motor cortex down to the muscular target organs. Actual aim is to transfer the results into a human model based on functional imaging. His clinical scientific work is focused on: New clinical trials on multimodal therapy of head and neck cancer, development of new methods to reconstruct the facial nerve, and functional diagnostics and therapy of multisensory taste disorders.
