Peter von Wichert hat sich ausgehend von klinischen Problemen besonders mit pneumologischen Fragestellungen beschäftigt. Nachdem in Hamburg das pulmonale Surfactant und seine Rolle für klinische Syndrome im Vordergrund stand, waren es später an der Medizinischen Poliklinik der Philipps-Universität Marburg Fragen der Atemregulation insbesondere Probleme der Atemsteuerung im Schlaf. 1994 war er Vorsitzender der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Internistische Intensivmedizin und 1998 Vorsitzender der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Innere Medizin. Sein besonderes Interesse gilt dem Erhalt einer einheitlichen Inneren Medizin.
Peter von Wichert has concentrated his work on chest medicine. During his time at the University Hospital of Hamburg he worked on pulmonary surfactant, later at the University of Marburg mainly on regulation of breathing during sleep. He was president of the German Society of Intensive Care and the German Society of Internal Medicine.
