Research
William Durham specializes in the mechanical properties of rocks and minerals at extreme conditions. His approach is experimental, and he is recognized for applying innovative techniques and instrumentation to his research problems. His particular interests are the flow and fracture of water ice and other frozen volatiles, with application to planetary dynamics and surface geology on Mars and icy satellites of the outer solar system; and the flow of olivine-bearing mantle rocks (especially olivine) to help understand the internal dynamics of our own planet.
