Research Priorities: Nanotechnology, interactive materials and devices, integrated nano-bio interfaces, cyber-human systems
Xiaodong Chen is a Singaporean materials scientist and engineer. He has revolutionised many aspects of nanotechnology, ranging from the development of plant-based robots to improvements in hand gesture recognition, and food safety. The results of his research into functional nanomaterials and bioelectronic interfaces are used in flexible devices, energy storage, and personalised medicine.
Xiaodong Chen focuses on the further development of nanotechnology by advancing research into functional nanomaterials and innovative nanotools. His vision encompasses the development of new materials and tools that function as building blocks for various applications, including innovative robotics, flexible electronics, and medical wearables that permit health parameters such as heart rate, blood sugar, and blood pressure to be tracked.
One of the focal points of Xiaodong Chen’s research is refining strategies for the construction of conformal bioelectronic interfaces, which are essential for the seamless integration of biological systems into electronic devices. By improving the biocompatibility, stability, and functionality of interfaces he aims to enable safe and effective integration into biological tissue. This includes a broad spectrum of applications such as nerve prosthetics, biosensors, and systems for administering medication.
With his research into novel materials and manufacturing technologies, as well as his interdisciplinary approach, Xiaodong Chen wants to use the insights from various fields such as materials science, biology, and engineering to solve the challenges posed by the scalable production of soft and flexible electronics.
