Research is widely recognized as one of the most important engines of innovation, economic growth, socio-economic development and enlightenment for countries around the world. Early career researchers play a central role in a country’s knowledge economy because they constitute the future intellectual capacity required to grow a strong national research and innovation system. Members of the Global Young Academy are likely to be among the future research leaders. The theme “Demography and Global Research” of this year's GYA General Assembly also links to many of the ongoing GYA activities, such as the Global State of Young Scientists project and other Working Groups as well as our endeavour to strengthen young scientists in Africa.

The assembly will also offer the space to meet and further discuss the support of the foundation and further development of National Young Academies, which is among the prime activities of the GYA, and to develop intra- and interregional cooperation.

The organisers gratefully acknowledge the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the host of this year´s GYA General Assembly, and IAP, the Global Network of Science Academies, for their support of the meeting.
