Average life expectancy in Germany has risen significantly in recent years. This development brings with it new challenges. It is important to maintain a high quality of life, productivity, and innovative capacity in a society where people are living longer. Research into aging and life course is addressing these challenges. In Germany in particular, cooperation between the individual disciplines should be strengthened. At present, this field of research is still falling short of its potential, according to experts from the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in their future report on science entitled “Research for the years gained: The future of ageing and life course research.”
