This document was adopted in 2018 by the 4th Joint Science Conference of the Berlin Process in Rome. The conference was organised jointly by the Leopoldina and the Italian Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei under the 2018 UK Presidency of the Berlin Process.
The signatories reaffirm in the document their commitment to the establishment of the Western Balkans Research Fund based in Trieste (Italy). In addition, the document puts forward measures to foster Smart Growth in the Western Balkans, to accelerate (economic) convergence and cohesion between the Western Balkans / South Eastern Europe and the European Union as well as short-term and long-term measures to strengthen regional cooperation in South Eastern Europe.
