Research

Helmut Hofer is one of the founders of symplectic topology, an area of mathematics combining topology, symplectic geometry and differential geometry. He has also made fundamental contributions to Hamiltonian mechanics and global analysis. His work on Hamiltonian mechanics started a new area in mathematics, now widely known as "Hofer geometry".
