Research
Peter Fulde was the founding director of the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems which has considerably influenced the development of theoretical physics in Germany. He was known for a series of pioneering contributions to condensed matter physics and quantum chemistry.
Of his work are particularly known the FFLO superconducting state, named after Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin and Ovchinnikov which has found entrance into solid-state physics as well as astrophysics and physics of cold atoms, the discovery of Zeeman splitting of quasiparticles in superconductors with Meservey and Tedrow, superconductivity via intra-atomic excitations etc. Other outstanding contributions include the work on correlated electrons (a monograph written by him has found wide-spread interest) and the prediction of numerous new phenomena in rare-earth systems.
Peter Fulde passed away on 11 April 2024.
