The scholarship is worth €2,000 per month for doctoral students and €2,500 per month for postdocs and can be awarded for a period of up to four months. During their research stay fellows have access to the Leopoldina library and archive as well as to relevant local and regional libraries and archives. The place of work for the duration of the scholarship is the Centre for Science Studies in Halle (Saale). The centre offers a suitable working environment and facilitates exchange with other ongoing research projects and members of the Leopoldina.
The call for applications is aimed at young scientists (doctoral students and postdocs, up to 6 years after completing their doctorate) who work academically in the field of the history of science in a narrower or wider sense. It is not limited to specific disciplines or methods. Applications must be received by the Leopoldina Centre for Science Studies by 12 December 2025.
The Friends of the Leopoldina Academy has been funding the Johann Lorenz Bausch Scholarship since 2016. It is named after the physician Johann Lorenz Bausch (1605-1665). Together with Johann M. Fehr, Georg B. Metzger and Georg B. Wohlfahrt, he founded the Academia naturae curiosorum, today's German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, in Schweinfurt on 1 January 1652. He was the organisation’s first president until the end of his life.
