Feeding a growing world population is facing ever greater challenges, especially as climate change and biodiversity loss are threatening the foundations of today's food systems. A fundamental reorientation in the production, distribution and consumption of food is urgently required. With its huge growth potential, aquaculture can play a decisive role in this.
But how can aquaculture be utilised more effectively for food security in Brazil and Europe? What changes in consumer behaviour, technological development and political framework conditions are needed to promote sustainable and diversified aquaculture? The webinar "Can aquaculture boost food security? Sustainable fish production in Brazil and Europe" sheds light on these questions based on the current scientific report "Advancing sustainability and circularity in aquaculture to build a resilient global food system". Young scientists from Brazil and Germany have formulated practical recommendations, such as simplified authorisation procedures, the integration of sustainable freshwater aquaculture products into the catering of public institutions and locally adapted management practices.
The event brings together representatives from politics, the aquaculture industry and science. It offers the opportunity to jointly identify key opportunities for action, discuss possible solutions and learn from the experiences of the two different but complementary aquaculture contexts in Brazil and Europe.
As part of the Leopoldina International Virtual Panel Series, the webinar offers a platform for dialogue and critical reflection. It supports the transfer of scientific knowledge into policy and practice to make aquaculture a more sustainable and strategic pillar of global food systems.
