The 6th Inter-Academy Symposium (IAS) of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities (Israel Academy) brings together distinguished scientists from Germany and Israel. The participants discuss present research findings about the function of nerve cells, synapses, as well as their interactions in nerve cell clusters and circuits. Progress in these fields of research shall contribute to the development of new therapies for brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, depression and schizophrenia.

German and Israeli young scientists participate in the symposium with poster presentations. For the first time, the best posters receive awards.

The 6th IAS “From Synapses to Circuits in Health and Disease” is a continuation of the Inter-Academy Symposium series in the field of neurosciences which is organised jointly by the Leopoldina and the Israel Academy. On the side of the Leopoldina, scientific coordinators of the symposium are Professor Peter Riederer, Professor Helmut Kettenmann, Professor Peter Hegemann, Professor Arthur Konnerth, Professor Ad Aertsen and Professor Dietmar Schmitz. Scientific coordinators on side of the Israel Academy are Professor Yadin Dudai and Professor Israel Nelken. The German Neuroscience Society (Neurowissenschaftliche Gesellschaft e.V.) financially supports the participation of German young scientists.
