Since the beginning of the 19th century, the history of mathematical symbolism has been one of the central themes in some historiographies, emphasising the uniqueness of Europe and distinguishing it from the rest of the world (or certain parts of Europe from others).
In her lecture, Karine Chemla ML will shed light on how this history has been approached, highlighting some tacit assumptions that have biased these historiographies. She will argue for a rethinking of respective aspects of the history of mathematical practice.
