European Academies Research Initiative (EARI)

The European Academies Research Initiative (EARI) is an association of European national science academies with the aim of networking on topics relating to the history of science. Based on an initial research project on "Academies at War", which examined the attitude of the European academies in the historical context of the First World War, EARI has focussed on the Cold War era in Europe in recent years. The initiative is also increasingly focussing on topics relating to the sociology and philosophy of science.

In 2014, the Royal Society (London), the Académie des sciences (Paris) and the Leopoldina launched an international project on the comparative history of European academies during the First World War. Under the leadership of Leopoldina member Wolfgang U. Eckart † (Heidelberg), Leopoldina member Claude Debru (Paris) and Robert Fox (Oxford), researchers from more than ten European and non-European countries discussed the positioning and activities of various academies and academic associations in the first quarter of the 20th century at three conferences. The proceedings of these conferences have been published in the Acta Historica Leopoldina volumes 68, 72, 75, and 78.

As an extension of this research activity, the national academies of seven European countries joined forces in summer 2019 to form a loosely connected international research network. The aim: to bring together and promote research on the history of European academies and science, which had previously only been conducted in isolated cases, and to generate new findings from a comparative perspective.

To this end, the academy representatives decided on a research framework topic that should characterise joint European and international comparative research: "Academies and Politics. Cold war and beyond". In joint events, the EARI discusses questions about the relationship between academies, science and politics in the past and present, the role and functioning of science diplomacy and the relationship between Western and Eastern academies during the Cold War.
