Feeding a growing global population is becoming increasingly challenging, especially as climate change and biodiversity loss threaten the foundations of today’s food systems. A fundamental shift in the production, distribution and consumption of food is urgently needed. With its significant growth potential, aquaculture can play a pivotal role.
But how can aquaculture more effectively enhance food security in Brazil and Europe? What changes in consumer habits, technological innovation, and policy are required to sustainably increase and diversify aquaculture? The webinar addresses these questions, guided by insights from the recent science report “Advancing sustainability and circularity in aquaculture to build a resilient global food system”.
Authored by early-career scientists from Brazil and Germany, the report presents actionable recommendations – such as simplifying licensing procedures, integrating sustainable freshwater aquaculture products into public food services, and developing local adapted management practices.
The event brings together representatives from politics, the aquaculture industry and science. It offers an opportunity to identify courses of action, discuss potential solutions and learn from the experiences of the two distinct yet complementary aquaculture contexts in Brazil and Europe.
