RNA-based therapies
RNA-based therapies have the potential to revolutionise the treatment and prevention of human diseases. This most recently became clear with the development of mRNA vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the therapeutic potential of RNA extends well beyond mRNA vaccines.

The working group is thus investigating different RNA-based strategies with the goal of clarifying the potential and limits of therapeutic RNA approaches beyond vaccines. One focus of this is the investigation of RNA technologies in connection with genome editing, which has already begun to revolutionise treatments for genetic diseases and cancers. These technologies facilitate precise and fast genetic modifications which were previously not achievable. The working group is also looking at antisense oligonucleotides. These are considered as a promising platform technology and represent the majority of RNA drugs approved to date.
The working group aims to prepare a comprehensive overview of current developments and the societal relevance of RNA medicine. This will also include the development of recommendations for research policy and healthcare that address both decision makers and the wider public in equal measure. At the same time the importance of effective risk communication will be underlined in order to foster acceptance of and trust in these new technologies. Finally, the statement is intended as a contribution to actively shaping the future of this promising type of medicine and to pave the way for innovative treatments which have the potential to fundamentally change healthcare.
