The energy consumption of computers and communication is doubling every 5 years and in a few years’ time will reach the 10% level of net electricity production in modern industrial societies. Novel types of memories based on nanostructures, combining the advantages of present flash and DRAM present not only a breakthrough in functionality but a large reduction in power consumption. Ultrafast computer interconnections based on photonic devices will be responsible for more than 50% of the power consumption of future Peta to Exa FLOP computers. Ways to dramatically decrease the power by orders of magnitude for transmitting a single bit by implementing advanced surface emitting lasers and nanolasers will be described. Semiconductor nanostructures present the basis of all these advances.
