VI. Heinrich F. C. Behr Symposium on Stem cells and cancer
- Symposien

- Ort Heidelberg
Wissenschaftliche Vorbereitung: Otmar D. Wiestler ML, Heidelberg, und Kollegen
Most cancers are not simply a mass of uniform tumor cells, but rather show a hierarchical organization. On top of that hierarchy are tumor cells which show significant similarities to normal stem cells and are thus called cancer stem cells (CSC). Importantly, reoccurrence after initial chemotherapy as well as metastasis formation is thought to be caused by therapy resistant cancer stem cells. In this symposium, the molecular and cellular basis of normal and malignant stem cells will be discussed and first approaches to target and eliminate CSCs will be presented.
